Globally, almost half of school-age refugee children are out of school. In many contexts, students attend parallel school systems that are not integrated into the national systems or curricula of their hosting country. These parallel systems have a number of drawbacks, including informal and unprepared teaching staff, severely overcrowded classrooms, fewer instructional hours and resources, and barriers to recognized qualifications.
What We Do
The OSUN Hubs implement Capacity Building at sites where such informal or parallel education systems are in operation. In these contexts, Refugees and Refugee-Led Organizations are engaged in providing education either by local NGO's or as incentive-based teachers working within the UNHCR or local RLO's.
By Capacity Building, the OSUN Hubs offer refugees up-skilling in four areas:
- Full training program for refugee facilitators.
- Mentorship training for teachers of refugees to ensure high quality education that can lead to RhEAP readiness.
- Administrative capacity-building for refugee-led organizations (RLO's) hosting Hubs’ programs.
- Researcher training for refugees researching Hubs and Working Group-related work.
All four of these components are critical to the Hubs’ model; since 2020, we have prioritized implementing programming in collaboration with refugee-led organizations.
